Great Start to Surfer Girl's U.S. Career

Expectations were high and Jungle Racing’s Surfer Girl delivered the goods in her U.S. debut finishing second by a head in an open allowance race Saturday at Santa Anita.

Sent off as the 3-1 third choice Surfer Girl broke a step slow but settled nicely for jockey Rafael Bejerano as they made their way down the hillside turf course.

All horses remained close until they crossed the synthetic. Then, Bejerano stayed outside and Surfer Girl took dead aim on the leaders. She made up three lengths and tried gallantly to run down eventual winner Flashover. The two horses went toe to toe through the stretch but in the end Flashover proved to much and won by a head.

After the race Billy Koch, managing partner of LRF who manages the horse for Jungle said, “The only thing that could’ve made me happier is obviously if we had won. I love this filly and can’t wait to see her run again. She will only get better from here.”

Look for Surfer Girl to be back in action when the spring Hollywood Park meet commences April 22, 2009.
